“Athletics at Fenn teaches boys life skills. Boys learn about themselves, how to work hard, and how to strive for the good of the whole team.”

Bob Starensier
Director of Athletics
Chair of Student Life Department

At Fenn, the gym and the field are classrooms where boys learn important lessons. Only team sports are played, and students must strive with their teammates toward a common goal. They push themselves athletically and work to be the best they can be in competitive sports grades 4 through 9. They also develop good sportsmanship and learn how to handle both success and disappointment with grace.

Along with the lessons, boys discover the personal joy of playing a sport. Sports are fun, offering boys opportunities to use their incredible physical energy. In fourth and fifth grade boys are introduced to all school team sports and begin intramural competition. Starting in sixth grade they can choose the sport they want to play each season. Eighth and ninth grade students join interscholastic athletics, with every boy given the opportunity to play on the team he chooses.

All coaches are Fenn teachers. These men and women see both elementary school sports and middle school athletics as another arena in which boys develop character as well as skills and knowledge. The athletic program includes baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and wrestling. Individualized alternatives are also available. In addition, boys enjoy informal games during recess and after lunch.
