Middle School Division Head 


The Fenn School seeks a Middle School Division Head to begin July 1, 2021. The Middle School Division Head, who reports directly to the Headmaster, is a member of the School’s senior administrative team, providing strategic leadership to the students, faculty, and parents of Fenn’s sixth and seventh grade.

The Middle School Division Head position demands several fundamental talents and skills, namely the ability to: establish an effective tone and appropriate vision for the Middle School; communicate and collaborate in a timely and effective way with colleagues, including the administrative team; communicate effectively with parents in a clear, responsive, and timely manner; and attend to details in an organized fashion in supervising faculty to meet deadlines and standards of quality in grade reporting, advising, and parent communication.

The Middle School Division Headship is an administrative position requiring the responsibilities listed below in addition to classroom teaching and coaching sports or supervising a student activity equivalent to coaching. It follows the academic year calendar with some additional pre- and post-school year preparatory work and meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Setting the proper tone, expectations, climate, and vision for Middle School students, faculty, and parents
     
  • Supervising the students of the Middle School in their academic, social and emotional, and citizenship growth and standing
     
  • Supporting and supervising advisors, including conducting regular grade-level advisor meetings and managing formal reporting for quality and timeliness
     
  • Promoting student leadership in grades six and seven through active programming and individual guidance
     
  • Addressing student cases of concern in collaboration with advisors, teachers, the school psychologist, learning specialists, the administrative team, and parents
     
  • Managing minor and major cases of student disciplinary infractions either personally or in collaboration with the faculty and/or Headmaster
     
  • Conducting evaluations of Middle School faculty in-person and in writing as part of the formal faculty evaluation program
     
  • Supporting and advising Middle School teachers, as needed, regarding individual students, conducting regular grade-level teacher meetings, and managing formal reporting for quality and timeliness
     
  • Communicating with parents on an individual and group basis, as needed, including completing timely calls and emails about individual students and writing periodic letters to parents about Middle School life
     
  • Maintaining an active, visible presence for Middle School students and faculty
     
  • Staying current and engaged on the developmental needs of Middle School students
     
  • Serving on the School Leadership Team, the Administrative Group, the Student Wellness Group, and the Middle School admissions committee
     
  • Leading/managing the Fifth to Sixth Grade Transition
     
  • Keeping administrative colleagues informed about all relevant matters in the Middle School
     
  • Informing and advising the Headmaster regarding relevant Middle School and school-wide matters
     
  • Promoting and supervising Middle School social events on- and off-campus
     
  • Directing the Middle School off-campus trips

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
     
  • Teaching experience required; administrative experience preferred
     
  • A love for working with adolescent boys
     
  • Experience engaging in challenging conversations with faculty, parents, and students
