Fenn Elves at Pine Street Inn

2/2/2010

Ten ninth graders braved the bitter cold in the parking lot to collect turkeys and monetary donations after the holiday assembly on Dec. 17. “Head elf” Will Crowley has been involved with the holiday collection for several years; his older brother, Peter (’04) started the program in 1999.

In the early years of the collection, most people brought frozen turkeys, and one year two cars were necessary to drop off more than 40 of the birds. In recent years, people have tended to donate cash and checks, which has actually been helpful, according to Will’s dad, Paul, because the Inn can be overwhelmed by turkey donations and run out of refrigerator space. This way, the money can be used however it is most needed.

Will’s mom, Tina, and his dad offer support in the way of hot chocolate and treats. Paul’s company, John Hancock, matches what the boys collect--$1080 this year. The Crowleys hope that another Fenn family will carry on the Fenn tradition, Paul says, to “link the act of giving to those in need.”
