The Hammett Ory Library is a 21st century, blended academic and social hub where users can connect with information and each other.

Promoting reading as a way to learn about ourselves and the broader world in addition to our Digital Literacy curriculum provides the cornerstones of the library program. Our curriculum encourages students to become lifelong readers, and critical thinkers, consumers, and creators of a wide variety of media formats.

Mission

The mission of the Hammett Ory library is two-fold: to provide a warm and accepting learning environment in which students are encouraged to become lifelong readers, to ask questions and seek answers, and to write, study, and create; and to provide a collection that enriches and extends the curriculum and reflects the diversity of our community and the larger world to build empathy, understanding, and respect for all people.

Digital Citizenship

The job of helping students become responsible and respectful users of a rapidly ever-evolving world of digital access and content is a community endeavor. We encourage families to have conversations with their sons about the rights and responsibilities that such tools offer. Fenn will also offer periodic parent events that discuss digital citizenship and help arm parents with the tools to navigate these conversations. Families are also welcome to visit the library if they are in need of more targeted advice.

Library Curriculum

The Hammett Ory Library’s curriculum helps graduates leave as competent, critical, and ethical users and producers of information and ideas. They also seek diverse perspectives and use social tools responsibly and safely. An appreciation of literature and Fenn's digital literacy curriculum spirals throughout each grade and across the different content areas and disciplines.

Lower School

Lower School students visit the Library for regular library classes one time per academic rotation. Areas of focus include:

Literature Appreciation

Recognizing a variety of genres from different ethnic and cultural heritages.
Understanding that stories act as “windows and mirrors” (compare and contrast) and teach readers to build connections and empathy.
Participating in schoolwide Book Madness reading incentive programs in addition to the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program.
Choosing reading materials in multiple formats.

Media Literacy

Digital Citizenship

Research Skills

Understanding that the process of inquiry has discrete steps.
Using those steps to find, organize, and present information.
Accessing and evaluating resources for beginning research.
Evaluating websites for credibility.
Accessing age-appropriate databases.
Locating information in the library using the Dewey Decimal System and within a book using non-fiction text features.
Determining if information found meets information need.
Using information ethically and crediting with appropriate citations.

Middle School

Middle School students visit the library on their own time for book selection and with their various classroom teachers who collaborate with the school librarians to teach media literacy and research skills and access the many resources and electronic databases. Areas of focus include:

Literature Appreciation

Recognizing a variety of genres from different ethnic and cultural heritages.
Understanding that stories act as “windows and mirrors” (compare and contrast) and teach readers to build connections and empathy.
Participating in our schoolwide Book Madness reading incentive program.
Choosing reading materials in multiple formats.
Broadening exposure to and enjoyment of a wide range of reading, including a variety of genres, perspectives, and formats both digitally and in print.

Media Literacy

Recognizing the ways in which students create a digital footprint and starting to protect their online presence and representing themselves honestly.
Using a variety of software, apps, and web 2.0 tools to meet their information needs.
Continuing to do honest academic work by citing sources and abiding by fair use and copyright practices.
Abiding by Sua Sponte ethics online both for personal and academic pursuits.

Research Skills

Understanding that the process of inquiry has discrete steps
Using those steps to find, organize, synthesize, and present information
Accessing, locating, and evaluatings resources for research
Evaluating websites for credibility
