Upper School
Our eighth and ninth grade students face a rigorous academic program that arms them with the skills, habits, and poise to excel at their next schools, including many of the best private schools in Massachusetts.
Our broad and deep academic program stresses the key disciplines of reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving in small classrooms averaging 12-14 boys, and seminar classes and group projects provide unique learning environments to engage the boys.
The eighth grade experience is enhanced by an interdisciplinary project with English and Social Studies classes to create and curate a museum that memorializes survivors and upstanders from the Holocaust. A year-long ninth grade capstone project then challenges our “seniors” to partner with non-profit organizations to brainstorm and identify innovative solutions to real-world problems that they are experiencing.
Our Upper School boys are also expected to adopt leadership roles in the community, setting a positive tone and serving as role models for younger students. Upper School boys relish the role of Big Brothers to our youngest boys, and ninth graders are invited to campaign for the prestigious positions of Student Body President and Vice President. All Upper School boys can also lobby for Student Senate positions.
Fenn's Upper School program strives to provide students with the appropriate balance of support and challenge. Students are recognized and valued for who they are and who they are becoming, and we empower them as community leaders.- Dave Irwin, Head of the Upper School

Why Ninth Grade at Fenn?
Created in 1975, our ninth grade program offers students a transformative and enduring educational experience that provides "seniors" a unique bridge between their completed middle school education and imminent secondary school careers.
Ninth-grade students benefit from a tightly knit class of approximately 25 students; teachers who know them exceptionally well; a school-wide student body that looks to them as role models; special senior privileges and extracurricular program offerings; and a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that is universally accepted for credit by secondary schools, both independent and public. It is a senior year that fosters leadership, academic challenge, class camaraderie, and maturation, all punctuated by each boy's "senior reflection" before All School Meeting reflecting on his Fenn career and accomplishments.
Secondary school admission directors often comment that Fenn seniors demonstrate notable maturity, leadership, and a sense of purpose. Boys' academic, athletic, and social skills are honed during their final year at Fenn in crucial ways that stimulate their self-confidence and personal growth.

Capstone Project
Fenn’s year-long capstone project is a highlight of the ninth grade year. Integrating content and skills from various disciplines, it is a culmination of students' exploration of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals focusing on human and environmental challenges.
