Mathematics Department Chair 


Fenn seeks a Mathematics Department Chair to begin on September 1, 2022. The Mathematics Department Chair reports to the Assistant Head of School for the Academic Program, is a member of the School's Academic Department Chair Group, and provides leadership and support to faculty in the Mathematics Department as well as students and parents.

The Mathematics Department Chair is responsible for curricular leadership and curriculum development; departmental staffing; faculty supervision, evaluation, and professional growth; budget oversight; and student placement and support. Additionally, academic department chairs typically teach three sections of their subject, coach athletics, and lead an advisor group of students.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Fenn’s Mathematics curriculum, in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School for the Academic Program;
     
  • Support and supervise Mathematics teachers through departmental meetings, individual feedback and evaluation for faculty members, and pursuit of individual and departmental professional development;
     
  • Oversee the staffing of the Mathematics department;
     
  • Support students and their parents in the area of Mathematics;
     
  • Manage student placement in Mathematics courses - Fenn sections by performance and potential in grades six through nine;
     
  • Address student cases of concern in collaboration with advisors, teachers, Division Heads, learning specialists, the administrative team, and parents;
     
  • Oversee the administration of the Continental Math League and New England Math League contests;
     
  • Oversee Fenn’s MathCounts team;
     
  • Teach up to three sections of Mathematics;
     
  • Serve as a student advisor;
     
  • Coach athletics in Fenn’s Lower, Middle, or Upper School;
     
  • Serve on the Academic Department Chair Group; 
     
  • Keep administrative colleagues informed about all relevant matters in the Mathematics department.
     

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, master's degree preferred;
     
  • Significant mathematics teaching experience required and administrative experience preferred;
     
  • Leadership experience, strong communication skills, and a commitment to collaboration;
     
  • Experience with and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work in a school setting;
     
  • A passion for and understanding of working with adolescent boys;
     
  • Experience engaging in productive conversations with faculty, parents, and students; and
     
  • The ability to foster connections between mathematics and other academic disciplines.
