Earth Day/Month Marked by Sustainability Activities and Survey for Long-Range Plan

As a native Mainer, Cameren Cousins, Fenn's director of Sustainability, grew up with a keen appreciation of the outdoors and natural resources and with the old Yankee sensibility, she says, of "Waste not, want not." Cameren, who teaches Latin at Fenn, took geology and ecology courses in college as well as classics. Those studies reinforced her awareness of "the delicate nature of our planet," she says. And they're off! Alumnus Makes Derby Run with Horse Hot Rod Charlie

On a recent Sunday, Dan Giovacchini '08 and his friends spent hours in the barn, feeding their horse carrots and cookies and looking forward to "having more adventures together," he says. Hot Rod Charlie, a three-year-old dark bay, probably had no idea why he was getting such special attention. Chuck, as he is affectionately called, didn't know he was famous: he had finished a close third the night before at the May 1 Kentucky Derby, only a length behind winner Medina Spirit, who may yet be disqualified for failing a drug test, and a half length behind second place finisher Mandaloun.
