| Alumnus in the Spotlight: Paul Bellantoni '82 does voiceover work for the Marvel Universe.
"Aughhh!" "Ooof!" "Yeow!" He has voiced a singing elf in a Dungeons and Dragons game and made a Cowardly Lion Christmas ornament croon, and he's played a French baking pan, a German scientist, and a doctor explaining the symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis. After a successful career as an opera singer, he began to do voiceover work and once played an anthropomorphic superhero bunny dentist for a Colgate cartoon commercial, in which he rapped about the importance of good oral health. The shift from opera singer to animated bunny struck him as funny: "I could hardly stop gleefully giggling long enough to finish the session." Continue reading >>> |

| CHALLENGE: The Mark W. Biscoe H'95 and Jane E. Biscoe Scholarship Fund |
|
|
| Two generous Fenn alumni have offered a $20,000 challenge to help us reach our goal of $100,000 in the scholarship fund, which was established in May 2021 in memory of Mark and in honor of Jane. Already we are one week into the challenge, and the scholarship fund stands at more than $73,000. If we receive another $7,000 within the next three weeks, the $20,000 challenge gift will kick in to help us cross the finish line! You can track the progress of the challenge, watch a special video featuring Director of Athletics Bob "Star" Starensier, and make a gift online by visiting fenn.org/biscoefund. The challenge began on January 5 and will end with the inaugural Mark W. Biscoe H'95 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, February 5. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next issue of FENN magazine, which includes an article on Mark's memorial celebration held on campus last October. Here is an excerpt from the piece by contributing writer Laurie O'Neill: When Geoffrey Smith '62 was dropped off at Fenn as a new student in the fall of 1960, he went up to the third floor of the Farm House to go to bed that evening. Soon, there could be heard "the wailing of eight homesick boys." After a minute or two, Geoffrey recalled, "Suddenly we heard a voice: 'All right boys. Settle down. Time to go to sleep. Big day tomorrow'." "It was like oil poured onto choppy waters," Geoffrey said. "That was my introduction to Mark Biscoe and my first impression. You heard the love and authority in that voice. You knew he cared about you." |

| | Legendary Extemporaneous Speaking Contest Takes the Fenn Stage for 93rd Year Last month, Fenn's core value of courage was on full display during the 93rd annual Hector J. Hughes Extemporaneous Speaking Contest in Ward Hall. Thirteen students chosen from grades six through nine bravely clenched the microphone, one right after the other, as they delivered two-minute presentations on topics they had received mere minutes before. Accomplished emcee David Duane welcomed the guests in Ward Hall and those community members watching from classrooms and offices via Zoom. The subject matter that they had to tackle was as zany as in years past, ranging from "That time I fell into Walden Pond" to "When it helps to be a Jedi master" to "You won't believe what I got in my farm share" to "And that's what happens when you're raised by wolves."
Ninth grader Max Lo took first prize for his response to "You know that little voice in the back of your head, well I met it." He revealed to the audience that his dreams have been haunted by the voice of none other than Athletic Director Bob Starensier and his repeated pleas for students to return the myriad balls that frequently litter the turf field after a day of spirited recesses. Library teacher Jill MacKinnon bestowed the award on Max, remarking on his stunning command of the stage and audience, and his ability to relate the topic to life at Fenn. |

We are at the halfway mark for this year's Annual Fund, and we are pleased to share that we have raised 77% of our $1,375,000 goal. Alumni participation in the Annual Fund has increased over last year, and we hope that your enthusiasm and support of Fenn continues over the winter and spring! Our goal for alumni this year is to reach 575 donors, and we currently have 253. Alumni gifts, at any level, send a compelling message to the whole School community that you value and endorse the Fenn experience, and that the broader Fenn family should as well. You can make a gift online at fenn.org/annualfund, or you can make a pledge to the Annual Fund by emailing Alan O'Neill '98, Director of Alumni Relations and Alumni Giving, at aoneill@fenn.org or by phone at (978) 318-3517. |
