The World Cup at Fenn

It has been an amazing fall season for the Middle School soccer program.  This year we had one of the largest soccer groups ever at Fenn. Every afternoon 66 boys from sixth and seventh grade come running to the soccer field ready to play “The Beautiful Game.” From the first minute, in true Fenn fashion, the boys look for a leadership opportunity, each vying to lead the warm up run and stretches drill. The boys work on refining their skills and look forward to playing games a s part of a vying team.

The display of sportsmanship is impressive. Coaches who play the role of referees have little to do since the boys know the rules of the game well, and try to maximize their play time without interruptions. At the end of each afternoon we have a group of very happy boys.

There is nothing like a good dose of fresh air and healthy competition.

In my opinion, Middle School soccer is much more than just about soccer, it is a de facto World Cup at Fenn.

There are myriad nations represented on the field. The boys talk about their love for soccer and how their cultural backgrounds have influenced their passion for the game. They all represent their nations well; from Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Morocco, Germany, The Netherlands, Greece, Ireland, France, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Serbia, India, Italy, the Philippines, and of course the USA, the world is present at Fenn every day.

The new look of Middle School soccer is the face of Fenn. More than ever we see in our hallways students from varied backgrounds, representing varied cultures and places in the world. In this era of globalization we are fostering necessary 21st century skills for our students: Cooperation, Communication, and Creativity.

It is amazing to see our Fenn boys practicing these skills every day, learning from each other, and sharing their different and amazing backgrounds to enrich their own lives and the lives of those around them.

Gooooooal!
