DIVERSITY AND TEACHING INTERNSHIP

This is a position for a generalist who is seeking an initial teaching experience with fourth through ninth grade boys that would prepare for an ongoing full-time position in the teaching profession. In addition to being assigned a mentor(s) with whom to work in one or more academic areas, the intern will meet with the Director of Diversity on a regular basis to plan and process experiences designed to provide growth and advancement of the Intern’s professional skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of Diversity.
  • Help direct the Student Diversity Committee.
  • Help the Director of Diversity support students and parents of color.
  • Assist in implementing professional development programs for faculty and staff.
  • Observe and assist a master teacher with instruction of a section, with full teaching responsibilities implemented on a graduated basis, including planning, developing lessons and teaching both cooperatively and individually.
  • Assistant coach a winter and spring sport. This could be at any level from fourth to ninth grade depending on the school’s needs and the interests of the Intern.
  • Substitute teach in English, math, social studies, science, Spanish, Latin, and the arts.
  • Perform “schoolhouse duties” - supervising recess, locker rooms, hallways, playground, parking lot and study hall coverage.

Requirements: College degree; flexibility; enthusiasm, a willingness to adapt to a wide variety of activities over short periods of time, and the ability to establish boundaries and set limits. The most consistent component to this position is the cooperative teaching done on a well-planned and well-organized basis. The most flexible component is the substitution, which will demand creativity, flexibility and willingness to do what is needed in the moment.

Interested parties should submit electronically to Tete Cobblah, Director of Diversity, and Stephen Farley, Assistant Headmaster for the Academic Program, a letter of interest and the following materials: resume, educational statement, and contact information for references. Mr. Farley will acknowledge receipt of materials by email and requests that candidates wait to contact the School. Fenn intends to begin interviewing as soon as promising candidates are identified.
