The I.D.E.A. PROGRAM
Imagine, Design, Engineer, Accomplish: This program was created to provide the opportunity for Fenn students to work independently, with the guidance of a mentor, to come up with innovative solutions to real world problems that they are interested in pursuing outside of the traditional Fenn curriculum. This allows students who are curious about the world to pursue their own interests in a supportive environment that promotes innovation. They will learn to pose a focused question, investigate and research what is known about that problem, explore possible solutions, try, fail, improve, build, engineer, and learn. Their finished projects will be showcased for all to see and they will have the opportunity to reflect on the process of learning in this non-linear, self-motivated fashion. This sort of project is a hallmark of a makerspace. Students who want to have an IDEA are asked to write a proposal to their advisor, parents, and mentor for refinement and approval. They explain their project in the proposal and have to plan when they have time in their week to work on it. It is meant to pursued outside of their academic class time.
