Intensive Literacy Program (ILP)

The Intensive Literacy Program (ILP) is a two-year program in which motivated fourth and fifth grade boys with strong intellectual potential and complex learning style differences receive small group instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and social studies. Study and organizational skills are also systematically taught in the program.

Students in the ILP are taught by an ILP teacher, who is a language specialist, for two years for approximately fifty percent of each school day, using a multi-sensory methodology. They participate in regular mathematics, science, and arts classes, and in sports. The goal of this carefully structured program is to strengthen language and learning skills and to provide strategies for a successful and full integration into the Fenn program in the sixth grade. The ILP enables most boys to achieve at a level more commensurate with their abilities and, in time, on par with their peers.
The ILP specialist serves as the boy’s advisor, communicating regularly with his parents and other teachers. The specialist has extensive experience with a wide variety of learning differences in the classroom and in tutorials, and is experienced in administering tests and interpreting results.

The ILP Mission Statement:

The mission of Fenn’s Intensive Literacy Program (ILP) is to support students with learning profiles that demonstrate a need for more individualized support in reading and/or writing. Inspired by diagnostic practices, the ILP teacher delivers comprehensive and direct instruction that targets individual skill development in the language arts.

Over a two-year period, the student will engage in meaningful and consistent collaboration with the ILP Department and his family. As a result, the student will accept ownership of his education through greater independence and an increased understanding of his learning profile.
