9th Grade Program
The ninth-grade program is the capstone of a Fenn education, preparing students well for their next schools. The rigorous college preparatory courses are universally accepted for credit by secondary schools, whether it’s a prep school, a private high school, or a public school. Ninth graders hold the top leadership positions and are role models for younger boys, grades 4-8. They also receive special privileges and greater freedom, and enjoy trips to Camp Caribou, Boston, and New York City.
“Ninth grade at Fenn gave me the opportunity to be a leader in academics and sports.” – Julian H. ’09 and Noble and Greenough School ’12
Fenn graduates distinguish themselves at their chosen high schools. They often hold leadership positions in high school student government, on athletic teams and win leading roles in high school plays and drama productions. Massachusetts high schools, as well as leading schools throughout the country, report that Fenn boys are natural leaders in class and on the playing fields.
Fenn assists families with boys’ transition to high school. Each year the school hosts a panel of representatives of area independent schools for Upper School families. Then a boy and his parents meet individually with the Secondary School Counseling Director to develop his high school list. The Counseling Office continues to work with the family throughout the application process.
Each speaker stands and delivers on his topic for two to three minutes in the Meeting Hall during All School Meeting. He may use notes, but should not read from them. “We want the boys to talk from the heart,” says Upper School Head Dave Irwin, “and make a connection with their audience.
Fenn faculty advisors help the boys prepare and rehearse their reflections, which are presented throughout the year, usually on Fridays.
