Everybody to the Bins!

Four new bins appeared in the Connelly Dining Hall today, and boys were lined up in front of them at the end of each lunch period, pausing for a moment to decide where to put each item they were carrying and helping each other make decisions. They tossed brown napkins into a container marked Composting, scraped pieces of spaghetti into one labeled O.R.T. (for Our Remaining Tidbits), dropped empty plastic containers into the Recycling bin, and stuffed plastic cracker wrappers into the container for Trash.
Fenn Sustainability Coordinator Cameren Cousins and Sodexo Dining Hall General Manager Melissa Joyce introduced the new system at All School Meeting this morning. During December, Cameren said, when a ""Weigh the Waste"" project took place, “we learned some really cool things about our food waste patterns.” The four new bins represent the next step in “distinguishing our waste streams, which is great for environmental sustainability.”
Previously a team of students carrying plastic buckets collected food waste appropriate for the compost pile out by the Fenn garden, where vegetables and herbs that are used in the school kitchen and given to Gaining Ground Farm.
If the boys do a good job of sorting over the next couple of weeks, the dining hall will reward that effort with a “very special and delicious Valentine’s Day dessert,” said Melissa. “We’ll show you some love if you show the bins some love,” she declared.
