Wednesday, April 10 (scrimmage) - Fenn School 2, Belmont Country Day School 5

Fenn’s JV Tennis squad plunged into its Spring 2019 term with a spirited run against Belmont Day School’s peppy coed side in a brisk, chilly wind at Winn Brook Courts in Belmont on Wednesday afternoon. Captain Theo Randall and Bobby Skrivanek led the way for the Blue & Gold, playing the top two singles positions before teaming up for a #1 Doubles set.  Randall responded with determination to Belmont’s sharp-hitting #1, a confident base-liner who rallied with alacrity and committed few errors. Randall took four games from him, but conceded six in a well-contested set. Skrivanek had the upper hand at #2 Singles, holding serve throughout for a 6-2 victory. Immediately after closing their singles matches, Randall and Skrivanek paired up for doubles, and they gradually established a rhythm in their court coverage. With increasingly calm, thoughtful shot placement at the net, they claimed a 7-5 victory.

Several other 8th graders played with customary Fenn sportsmanship and effort in their first interscholastic tennis outings. Ben Ma played both singles and doubles, while Maxie Murphy played doubles twice. Parker Nagtegaal, Brian Fortin, and Forrest Feist also took the court for Fenn.

Belmont Day earned well-deserved results at Third Singles and Second, Third, and Fourth Doubles.

Friday, April 12 - Noble and Greenough School 5, Fenn School 2

Maxie Murphy was a double winner on Friday afternoon, pairing with Parker Nagtegaal at #2 Doubles and with Avery Feather at #3 Doubles to carve out Fenn’s only victorious sets against Noble & Greenough’s well-balanced and congenial coed middle school tennis team. Both of Murphy’s partnerships resulted in 6-4 scorelines. Ben Ma played a fine set at #3 Singles, serving consistently and relying on patient ground strokes against a spunky, tireless Nobles opponent. They played many lengthy rallies, and their score was never more than a game apart, until she won the ninth and tenth games to prevail 6-4.

Theo Randall and Bobby Skrivanek competed gamely for Fenn at both singles and doubles, yet their opponents were able to pull ahead early and fight off most of the challenges.
