McGowan '26, Fenn Cross Country Win Roxbury Latin Jamboree

McGowan '26, Fenn Cross Country Win Roxbury Latin Jamboree

History was made on Wednesday, November 6th, as the Fenn School captured 1st Place overall at the Roxbury Latin Jamboree for the first time in school history. On top of that achievement, eighth grader Charlie McGowan finished 1st overall in the Roxbury Latin Jamboree. He became just the second Fenn runner ever to win the race outright. The other was JT Gally '23 in 2021.

The Roxbury Latin Jamboree consisted of the top 10 runners from the following schools: BB&N, Belmont Hill, Dexter, Fay School, Fenn School, Fessenden, Hillside, Meadowbrook, Milton Academy, Noble & Greenough, Park School, Roxbury Latin, and Thayer Academy. The race consisted of only seventh, eighth, and ninth graders, and there over 120 total runners who competed.

Charlie McGowan crossed the finish line first, finishing with a time of 13:27 (6:07 pace). The only other Fenn runner recorded to have finished with that pace was JT Gally '23. McGowan kept within his limits and ran with calm confidence. Coach Derek Cribb noticed at one point, McGowan was encouraging his head-to-head competitor to push through his cramp and keep running. This finish comes after McGowan placed 9th at the State Cross Country Meet on Saturday, November 2nd in Devens, MA.

Following his teammate was ninth grader Alex Signorovitch, who finished 3rd overall with a time of 13:43 (6:14 pace). This was by far the fastest Signorovitch had run during a race at Fenn while on a hillier and longer course than Fenn's course. Fellow ninth grader Juwan Acevedo closed the gap and finished within the top ten, securing 7th overall with a time of 13:56 (6:20 pace), the fastest he's ever run at Fenn as well.

Claiming spots in the top 20 finishers were eighth grader Henry Bonzagni (11th overall) and seventh grader Tye Reesey (16th overall). Both of these runners finished consistently in the top five of Fenn's runners throughout the season.

Eighth graders Warren Turner and Ryan Cahoy finished 59th and 85th overall, as both battled through the hot conditions to complete the race with decent times. Seventh grader Peter Eriksen finished in 69th place overall, which was good enough to be the fifth seventh grader to cross the finish line overall.

Emblematic of their season, it was Fenn's depth of talent and consistent runners that led to the Fenn securing the team title! Even with a few injuries at the beginning of the race, the quality of runners did not affect overall team performance. Led by team captains McGowan, Reesey and Bonzagni, the team worked together and supported each other during all of the practices and races up to this final event.
