Fenn Shows Strong Performances at New England Junior School Tournaments

Fenn Varsity Baseball, Lacrosse, and Tennis all competed in their respective New England Junior School Tournaments on Saturday, May 16. Baseball and Lacrosse both competed at the Fay School Athletic Complex in Southborough, MA while Tennis competed at Fessenden School in Newton, MA.

After a solid showing in their 10-6 semifinal win over Rectory School, Fenn Varsity Baseball took home the championship with a 3-2 win over Fessenden. Fenn was previously 0-2 on the season against Fessenden, but saved their best for last. Ninth grader Lucca Cobas was exceptional on the mound for Fenn, pitching all seven innings while giving up two earned runs and striking out 14 batters. Seventh grader Sam Lavoie had an RBI-single to start the scoring for Fenn in the 4th inning. Fessenden would draw two back in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Fenn loaded the bases in the top of the 7th as eighth grader Andrix Sousa drew a walk to bring home the tying run. Eighth grader Ben Hart-Nibbrig scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run on a wild pitch.

This championship win for Fenn marked the fourth time in five years that they took home the top prize (2022, 2023, 2025, and 2026).

"Heart and mental toughness played a factor for the team," said Coach Ryan Miklusak. "Lucca was terrific on the mound and the boys around him made enough plays to help secure the win."

Varsity Lacrosse earned a 3-1 record in pool play for their tournament, taking wins over Rectory (6-5), Fay School (5-3), and Indian Mountain School (-- --). Their lone loss came to Fessenden (2-8), but they would get another crack at them in the championship game.

After a strong showing throughout regulation time, the score was even at 3-3. The game would go into double-overtime with Fessenden scoring to claim the title. With what was a tough way to finish the day of play, Coach Matt Ward '00 couldn't have been more proud of the team's effort. "This was the best the team played all season against a strong Fessenden team. Their effort and sportsmanship were at an all-time high as the day progressed. We laid it all out there and that's all we could ask for."

Varsity Tennis brought four singles players to Fessenden for a singles tournament against Belmont Hill, Fay, Fessenden, Eaglebrook, Hillside, Rectory, and Roxbury Latin. Those four boys were co-captains Ronan Akbudak '27 and Alex Brown '27, William Wu '27, and Kevin Yu '28. The boys showed great fight and played some top tennis. Alex reached the quarterfinals of the championship bracket while Ronan reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket. The team finished fourth out of eight teams.

"The boys displayed some really great tennis today against top competition," said Coach Dominic Dipersia. "Their sportsmanship and support of one another was so great to see. They represented Fenn very well."
