Outfitted in their signature “Fennonaci” branded jerseys, inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, twelve students from Fenn’s Math Team represented the School brilliantly on Saturday, February 1 at the Metro-West Chapter MATHCOUNTS® Competition. MATHCOUNTS® is a national program providing middle school students the opportunity to compete in live math contests as individuals and school teams.
After a rigorous day of competition, the foursome competing as the competition team for Fenn, made up of seventh graders Nathan Qu and Eugene Dong, as well as and eighth graders Nathan Xu and Vincent Wu, emerged as the 2nd place finisher among a field of 17 exceptional teams and 200+ competitors. This top three finish means they have qualified for the state competition on March 1 in Burlington, MA.
The other Fenn students who also participated in the competition did so as individual participants. This included seventh graders Chase Raja, Travis Stuart, Asher Berger, and Wilder Wyman-Jones and eighth graders Shiven Patel, Austin Fischl, Andrew Fugh, and Luke Soliman.
On top of the team success was the individual success from a few of our students. Nathan Qu finished 6th overall, Vincent Wu finished 11th overall, and Austin Fischl finished 41st overall - all claiming a spot in the top 25% competitors.
The competitors hail from a Fenn Math Club. Over the course of the fall and winter on Tuesday afternoons from 2:00-3:00 p.m., students in grades 6-8 are able to sharpen their math skills and “train” with their classmates. Math teacher George Scott is their guide and coach, with support from Math Department Chair Ryan Miklusak.
“It’s great to see so many interested boys voluntarily engage in fun and challenging math every Tuesday afternoon for an hour,” shared Mr. Scott. “They love to share ideas and clever approaches to solving difficult problems, and the peer-to-peer learning that happens in the process is inspiring.”
