Rhythm and Rhyme On Full Display for Fenn's Poetry Slam

The Hammett Ory Library was transformed into The Beat Café on Friday, November 8 for the 8th Grade Poetry Slam. Fenn students enjoyed an assortment of pastries and refreshments as part of the café vibe and were joined by award-winning writer and poet Dariana Guerrero. Ms. Guerrero emceed the slam after visiting campus last month to workshop student pieces in person on how to work through the creative process of slam poetry.

After all students performed their pieces in their English classes, twelve students qualified for the finals and performed before their peers. Taking home first place was Nathan Xu with his piece “I Wanna Hear A Story.” Second place went to Johnny Soukup for his poem titled “Remembrance of Tradition,” while claiming the third place prize was Evan Rosso with his poem “Robotic,” drawing inspiration from “Touchscreen” by Marshall Davis Jones.

A special shoutout to Ms. Guerrero for spending time with the students and helping them show their passions through slam poetry. Thank you also to Ms. MacKinnon, Ms. Daley, and Ms. Waldeck for their creativity in transforming the library into a wonderful space for slam poetry.
