VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
FENN SCHOOL –
CARROLL SCHOOL –
Fenn headed to Carroll School as the only race they would have in their week. The boys in blue and gold would dominate their performance on the course, finishing with 10 of the first 11 runners across the finish line. Coach Derek Cribb mentioned the boys were ready for this meet thanks in large part to the hills and trails that Fenn has on our North Campus.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11
ST. SEBASTIAN’S –
FENN SCHOOL –
After a little time off from their race schedule, the Fenn runners would host St. Sebastian’s School at home to close out the week. With time at home to prepare on the course, Fenn would finish the race with five of the first six runners to cross the finish line.
Eighth grade co-captain Charlie McGowen set a new course record with a time of 10:28, breaking the previous record by 16 seconds. Seventh grader Thomas Carrol (12:02) earned a personal record time, while eighth graders Phineas Clake-Talhouni and James Maletz finished at the exact same time, crossing the finish line in 12:48 to both collect personal records themselves.
VARSITY FOOTBALL
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2
FENN SCHOOL 14
FESSENDEN SCHOOL 0
After a tough loss to their rival the previous week, Fenn bounced back with a great team win on the road, taking down Fessenden 14-0. The team began the game with an unbelievable 70-yard touchdown return from ninth grader Jetari Veal to jump out to an early lead. From that point on, the team played with confidence. The defense played incredibly all game, as they only allowed two first downs on the day.
Ninth grader Patch Remington and eighth grader Renzo Ma both had solid games on the defensive line and ninth grader William Huang cleaned up any plays that got beyond the line of scrimmage. Despite an up-and-down offensive performance, the boys stayed determined. Their hard work eventually paid off as they scored on another long touchdown, once again from Jetari. Eighth grader Trevor Clarkin and ninth grader Vinny Hogan split time at quarterback and each had a couple of big pass plays.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 (Flag)
RIVERS SCHOOL 28
FENN SCHOOL 22
Following a big win the week before, Fenn took a break from tackling drills and formations to have some fun with Rivers as they played them in a flag football game. The two teams were well matched and any spectators that were in attendance caught a barn burner of a game. Rivers would eventually take home the win, but not before the crowd was entertained by a great game. Ninth grader Ethan Na led the way for the home team and had two interceptions and multiple long catches. Trevor Clarkin, Vinny Hogan, and seventh grader Adam Berger, all took turns playing quarterback with each of them doing a great job. A padded matchup with Nobles awaits the Fenn boys.
VARSITY SOCCER
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2
RIVERS SCHOOL 1
FENN SCHOOL 2
The Fenn varsity soccer team played host to Rivers on October 2. Looking for a bounce back again following a close loss at St. Sebastian’s, the Fenn boys would have to work from behind to overcome the 1-0 deficit at halftime.
Thanks to their effort and focus in the second half against a strong Rivers team, eighth grader Xandi Sureau scored a screamer of a goal off of a volley from 25 yards out to tie it up. No more than five minutes later, co-captain Cass Myler notched the game-winning goal by stealing a pass across their defensive backfield and putting it in the back of the net. This was a standout win for the Fenn team so far this season.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4
FAY SCHOOL 6
FENN SCHOOL 0
Looking to win back-to-back games, Fenn would take on rival Fay School in a tough matchup at home. Fay showed how strong and connected they were as a team, staying sharp throughout the game. Fenn played strong on the ball in the first half, but would find themselves down 2-0. Ninth grade goalie Ryan Mulvaney was sharp in net, making an astounding 11 saves to keep Fenn close. Fenn saw strong play from eighth graders Elad Lawrence and Jay Frida throughout the game. In the end, the visitors took home the win, 6-0.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9
RECTORY SCHOOL 2
FENN SCHOOL 0
In a closely contested battle, Fenn took on a solid Rectory School team and played hard on the ball with good possession throughout the game. In the first half, Rectory played with a sense of urgency and made it harder for Fenn to keep control of the ball. Goalie Ryan Mulvaney played great in goal again making 11 more saves, including two diving full extension saves to keep the game within reach.
Rectory would score the opening goal off of a well constructed corner kick, and followed up shortly after to seal the win with a well placed roller to the bottom right corner. Co-captain Mitchell Ntuen, as well as eighth graders Austin Fischl and Lucas Vasquez, played great throughout the game on the back line, as well as strong wing play from eighth graders Jack Adams and Matt Greco.
JV SOCCER
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4
BELMONT HILL 1
FENN SCHOOL 2
When Belmont Hill first arrived on campus, they looked to be the stronger side, with many of their first eleven demonstrating a fine first touch and a reliable ability to deliver the ball to a teammate. Fenn goalkeeper Chase Gillick was tested by several early breakaways, yet he smothered the shots and launched quick counterattacks with alert throws and well-placed dropkicks. Seventh grader Ryan Liu tracked down one of those booming kicks and served through to seventh grader Max Peddar for the opening goal at 15 minutes, and that seemed to trigger a meaningful shift in field tilt.
Belmont Hill controlled the tempo of the game, but Fenn would always manage to smother them on the back line of the defense. Fenn was able to finish one more second-half opportunity than they did, sealing the 2-1 win at home. Gillick was a massive presence throughout the match, and his distribution generated exciting offensive opportunities for Fenn.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9
SHORE COUNTRY DAY 3
FENN SCHOOL 2
In a match quite similar to last week's close victory against Belmont Hill, Fenn's JV boys summoned impressive energy and resolve against Shore's technically superior varsity side. This time, however, the visitors from Beverly were able to parlay their distinct advantage in possession into numerous dangerous scoring opportunities, and they finished three.
Fenn managed to bag two goals on speedy counterattacks, but over the course of an hour, some breakdowns in the passing accuracy proved too costly to outrun. Midfielders Shep Leonard, Andrew Fugh, Aaron Newman, Ryan Liu and Preston Simon played with exemplary heart and hustle for our short-handed squad.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11
FENN SCHOOL 1
FESSENDEN SCHOOL 6
As the JV boys headed south to Newton, they were met with Fessenden's big, fast, athletic Varsity B squad. From the opening whistle, Fessenden dominated the match and punished Fenn’s mistakes with the ball. While their play was not centered on remarkable individual skills, they won the footraces, settled incoming balls effectively, and picked off virtually every Fenn pass in the lane. Fenn’s eleven boys (no substitutes) put forth a determined effort, yet Fessenden was able to substitute freely and they punched in three well-earned goals in the later stages of each half. Co-captain Finn Whitman gamely played goalkeeper in place of the injured Chase Gillick, and fellow ninth grader Zach Nelson finished a nice solo run shortly before the final whistle to pull one on the board for Fenn.
THIRDS SOCCER
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
CARROLL SCHOOL 4
FENN SCHOOL 0
As the Thirds Soccer season continued to get underway, the boys in blue and gold dug deep and played hard against a tough Carroll squad. Carroll would notch two goals early, making it 2-0 at the half. Fenn would find some rhythm in the second half, passing and communicating more effectively after regrouping at half-time. Eighth grader Chase Gillick, filling in at goal, along with seventh graders Aaron Newman and Preston Simon, contributed to the effort put forth. Carroll was fast and strong, and closed the game with two more goals.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4
FAY SCHOOL 2
FENN SCHOOL 1
As Fay arrived on campus, the coaches met to discuss the game ahead of them, as Fay only had 9 healthy bodies. They decided on playing 9-versus-9 for the entirety of the game. With a lot of open field, chances were flying in from both sides. The effort from the boys was great to see following some great days of practice. In the end, it was Fay that pulled away on top, as Fenn fell 2-1.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11
FENN SCHOOL 0
LEXINGTON CHRISTIAN 8
In another game where one of the teams was not as healthy, this time being Fenn, the two teams decided to play 10-versus-10 for the duration of the game. With the normal rotation of goalies injured for the game on the Fenn side, LCA would use that as an opportunity to put their offense to work. They would control the tempo of the game from the opening whistle to the last.
Despite the loss, Fenn continued to improve on their great passing overall as a team. It just wouldn’t amount to offensive chances against a stronger opponent. With two rosters full of players, LCA had plenty of bodies to stay fresh. Our student-athletes handle themselves in a mature fashion and put forth an effort all the way through the end of the game.
